Update 1-31-2009

Life continues fairly uneventfully. The biggest thing of note recently though was that Linda earned her brown belt! I am very proud of her. She's proud of herself too and she should be, it's a heck of an accomplishment.

Karate is interesting sometimes. We get focused on a destination. That destination is suaully the next belt level or the next test. Then you hit that one and you set your sights on the next destination. It takes conscious effort to remember that there is no destination. Then when you do, it's overwhelming. I am a person who likes closure. I like things to fit in certain spaces and when they don't, I'm very uncomfortable with that. Karate doesn't fit in a neat little space because it's never "done." Whatever level of accomplishment you attain, there's always more.

Pretty deep, huh? Okay, not so much. But what struck me about that thought is how much karate is like relationships. They're never done. You have to constantly work at them to improve them. If you let it sit, then like karate, it falls off. Okay, now I'm getting deep and starting to bore myself so you must really feel bad reading this. Later.

  1. Interesting thoughts about Karate and relationships! For me, I like the fact that there is always more to Karate. That I can always get better. That there is always something more to achieve. In my case, that there is plenty more to achieve! The constant work is what keeps me going back day after day. It's never boring. I hadn't thought about relating that to relationships but you are right. Constant effort to keep a relationship working. How philosophical of you! :)

  2. Our initial destination gives us the journey, but the journey gives us our real destinations.

    Trying my hand at wisdom.

The other one I had was: Death is an illusion, and so are pants. But I cribbed that one from a cartoon.
